The Coaching Team

Coaching in archery in this country is almost entirely provided by volunteers who have financed their own training and who receive no income from their activities beyond travel expenses. While they will make every effort to help, there are times when they actually want to practise their own shooting!

It is the desire of the Coaching Team to implement a policy that anyone may ask for help of a Coach who is wearing a red shirt or jacket bearing the Hampshire Coaching Group logo (as modelled by Gary below). If they are not wearing such a top, they can offer to help you but they are likely to be trying to be an Archer rather than a Coach!

There is an explanation of the grades of GNAS coach located at the foot of this page.

Coaching grades

The Grand National Archery Society has created a Coach training and examination scheme that offers a series of grades of Coach. These are outlined in a leaflet available from the GNAS website as a PDF file. The scheme is being updated with new grade names, syllabuses and examinations.

Briefly, the grades (as at early 2008) are:

(Community) LeaderIntended for people teaching archery in Sports Centres, Schools or Youth Organisations not affiliated to the GNAS.
Level 1 Coach
(replaced Assistant Coach)
Level 1 Coaches teach archery and coach new archers in a GNAS affiliated club.
Level 2 Coach
(Replaced the "Coach" grade)
Level 2 Coaches work mainly within their own Club organising and carrying out the teaching of beginners together with coaching established archers to a higher standard.
County CoachCounty Coaches still work within their own Club teaching beginners but are expected to be coaching established archers to a high standard.
They are expected to be involved in training coaches and working with archers and coaches from other clubs in their area.
Senior CoachSenior Coaches are expected to work with archers of the highest standards and to organise the teaching and development of coaching. Both activities would be carried out over a wider geographical area, probably nationally.

The logo of the Hampshire Archery Association Coaching Group consists of the HAA rose motif and the old GNAS Coaching logo with the words "Coaching Group" superimposed in the style of the traditional green GNAS Coach Flash.
